Is modern capitalism sustainable?

If the recent global financial crisis marks the beginning of the end of modern capitalism. It is a curious question, because it seems to presume that there is a viable replacement waiting in the wings. The truth of the matter is that, for now at least, the only serious alternatives to today’s dominant Anglo-American paradigm are other forms of capitalism.

Weak institutions preventing sustainable growth

LAHORE: Although Pakistan has most liberalised trade regime in the region, its economy is still not on a sustainable growth path due to weak institutions, which are vital in implementing policies in letter and spirit.

Economic experts point out that institutional capacities depend to a large extent on the combination of the rule of law and democracy.

They say global data indicate that not only democratic governments, but authoritarian regimes as well with strong rule of law can deliver efficient institutions, which ensure sustainable economic growth.

S Africa keen for economic partnership

South Africa is keen to build economic partnership with Pakistan and for the purpose it is making all out efforts for increasing interaction between business communities in two countries.

Sustainable development conference: 'For peace, reform is a precondition'

ISLAMABAD: The establishment and anti-democtratic forces have not allowed democracy to function. “You can have democracy on paper, but they will rig the elections,” remarked noted economist Kaiser Bengali while speaking on the first day of a conference on “Peace and Sustainable Development in South Asia: The Way Forward,” at a local hotel on Tuesday.

The conference has been organised by the Sustainable Development Policy Institute’s (SDPI).

Citing the bureaucracy’s repeated obstruction of the NFC Award implementation as an evidence, Bengali said, “The dominant group simply does not want to share power”. He said there was a spirit of cooperation and compromise between the federating units during the negotiations, but in the months following, Islamabad created “one obstruction after another”.

Bengali bemoaned ethnic fragmentation in Pakistan and the failure of the establishment to construct a genuine vision of national identity, arguing that they were instead pursuing personal aggrandizement and a policy of “beating heads” in Balochistan, reminiscent of the Centre’s strategy towards East Pakistan.

Pakistan's federal cabinet has described the US support to India as permanent member in the UN Security Council (UNSC) as a decision having "grave ramifications" and implications for peace, security and stability in Asia.

The cabinet expressed concern and disappointment Wednesday over US President Barack Obama's support for India's UNSC bid, the Dawn reported on Thursday.

"It has been observed that this decision (of the US) has grave ramifications for the direction and prospects of the system of multilateral cooperation as envisaged by the founding fathers of the UN Charter," said a resolution the cabinet passed at a meeting presided over by Prime Minister Yousuf Raza Gilani.

Obama made the announcement of support for New Delhi as a permanent member in the UNSC during his Nov 6-9 India visit.
