The Tianjin Eco-City Business Park is currently being developed as
part of the Sino-Singapore Tianjin Eco-City Start-up Area. SSTEC have
commissioned HASSELL as the landscape architect for the overall business
park and the landmark building within the business park. The landmark
building will become a showcase project for the whole site,
incorporating a range of sustainable design principles and strategies.
This project responds thoughtfully to the climatic conditions of the
Tianjin seafront, which includes wet summers, dry and cold winters. It
also responds to the problem of the sustainable management of water
resources through a variety of strategies, including porous pavements to
80% of hard surfaces, bio-swales, a rain garden and bio-retention pool,
and a drip irrigation system which can reduce water consumption by
40%-60%. These features provide an instructive experience for visitors
to the site, through the display of water collection, treatment and
recycling.
Greywater produced on site can be exported to other locations,
providing a sustainable supply of water for the broader urban area. In
addition, the landscape actively remediates the soil of the site, which
currently has high salinity.
The design principles and strategies for the demonstration site will
be implemented across the whole of the Eco City through a comprehensive
guidelines document. This document includes a range of topics, including
vegetation and material selection, water collection and recycling
systems, signage and lighting design. This work has ensured that the
strong design ideas developed by HASSELL for the landmark site will
inform the design and implementation of many projects in the future.
